The Weird Faces Vending Machine is an installation that generates an infinite amount of weird faces that look like my hand drawn faces. It thereby questions the dominating ways in which value is generated from art in the gallery context. Instead of placing an artificially limited number of prints in the gallery space for the sole purpose of generating value and fake exclusivity, a vending machine is installed, that sells a potentially infinite number of unique computer generated prints. The name from the credit card is used by the machine to talk to the buyer and walk him through the purchase process. In addition the name is used to write a personalized dedication message on the back of the print in my own handwriting. A unique art print and a personal dedication by the artist for only three dollars? Sounds like a good deal!

Weird Faces Vending Machine

Ecube is an artistic installation that explores the mythological idea of the echo being another person repeating or imitating a sound rather than an acoustic phenomenon. Participants can enter the cube and say any word or make any sound into the provided telephone. Custom software then computes the most similar sounds that people previously made and plays them as the responding echo. Thus the echo becomes not only an echo of sound, but also an echo over time connecting to people previously standing in the same spot, making noise.

Computer generated images have a certain aesthetics to them that make them immediately recognizable as such by the trained eye. Weird Faces Study is an attempt to combine my old interest in illustration with programing to create something procedural that has a truly individual artistic touch to it and is not instantly recognizable as a generative art piece. Even though, the faces look hand-drawn, they are entirely expressed by algorithmic rules. Each face is random, each face is unique. Still, they look similar to my actual hand drawn faces.
