We are  sorry to announce that the visit from [Ilan Manouach](https://ilanmanouach.com/), our scheduled speaker during Winter quarter and recipient of the UCLA Regents' Lecturers for 2025-2026 will have to be postponed.

This is due to the recent changes to the UCLA Regents' Lecturers support that resulted in a loss of funding for all recipients of this award.

We are searching for other options so that we can bring Ilan to the department as part of our annual DMA Lecture series.

Poster Talks by Parisa Tashakori, Iran/USA

Parisa Tashakori, graphic designer and visual artist, is an instructor in CMCI's Advertising, Public Relations and Media Design department, with a specialization in design and visual art.

With over 20 years of experience in design, she has worn many hats including designer, project manager, exhibition curator, activist and artist. Throughout these roles, she has always been focused on social and cultural engagement, pushing the idea of collaboration as a tool for quality connections and meaningful changes.

Rikke Hansen is a Danish Graphic Designer and Educator. She works and teaches in the intersection between language, culture and space. For several years she has been working with product development, branding and consulting for companies and organisations, and as Head of Department at Design School Kolding she played a significant role in developing new educational programmes for the future.

For over thirty years, Scott Laserow has been bringing his unique approach to graphic design in the form of print media, web and interactive designs, and animations. Laserow’s work has won over 75 prestigious national and international awards, been featured in 60 publications, and included in 48 exhibitions in 16 countries.

Caroline Busta is a Berlin-based writer, editor, and consultant working with questions of culture, technology, and globalism. She is the founder of New Models, a media outlet for the critical analysis of art, tech, politics, and pop-culture. From 2014 to 2017, she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Berlin-based critical art journal Texte zur Kunst. Prior to that, she was an Associate Editor at Artforum magazine in New York.

CAROLINE BUSTA |CLEARNET vs. DARK FOREST: NOTES ON THE NEW PSYCHOGEOGRAPHY OF ART

MSHR is the art collective of Birch Cooper and Brenna Murphy. The duo collaboratively builds and explores systems composed of sound, light, sculpture, software and circuitry. Their practice is a self-transforming cybernetic entity with its outputs patched into its inputs, the resulting emergent form serving as its navigational system. These outputs primarily take the form of installations and performances that integrate interface design with generative systems and a distinctive formalist approach. MSHR's name is a modular acronym, designed to hold varied ideas over time.

MSHR emerged from the art collective Oregon Painting Society in 2011 in Portland, Oregon.

Generating typography

Daniel Maarleveld is a graphic and motion designer based in Amsterdam. Since 2007 he has been running an independent practice, with a strong interest in generative design and kinetic typography. His work is an endless quest for unexplored possibilities of natural and mathematical principles. Recently, his practice has shifted more towards code-based motion design. In addition to his design practice, he taught at the Saturday course of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, and typography at the ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem.

Mitch Paone 

"Time is form, form is time."

A Lecture highlighting DIA's "input output" approach to approach highlighting the thinking and process behind kinetic identity design. The lecture will showcase how Mitch's background as a jazz pianist, composer and performer has developed a framework for DIA's design process, collaborations and business model with partner Meg Donohoe. Additionally, the lecture will cover the influence of new tools and technologies in DIA's design practice. 

Mitch Paone is a partner and creative director of New York & Geneva based creative agency DIA Studio, which specializes in corporate and cultural visual identity systems, graphic design, and typography.

Both will speak at DMA SALON - UG Lecture at 10am (PST).

DANIEL MAARLEVELD AND MITCH PAONE 

To voice memo an idea is make a note for later reference, to brainstorm, to document and also to be able to gain perspective by talking to oneself’s other selves. 

It is a working process within the act of walking, being in movement, and within living in the dimensions of the minds many perceptions of realities.

By note taking through listening to ones own voice, voice memos function as a critique and point of reflection mostly free from judgement. A voice memo documents the site of practice, As being inherently within the site of being in process. It captures how within this site, ideas encounter us suddenly as by surprise. 

Often starting voice memos with the word "Idea", Argote talks to herself....phone in hand, recording. 

The phone offering a space to be ones own objective listener. The phone as studio, as testing site, and as potential platform that is able to share with others. The phone as architecture.

Voice memos for Argote allow her to revisit moments as they pass, as she passes them, and to be able to converse, hold, consider and save for later.

Carmen Argote is a multidisciplinary artist who works through the act of inhabiting a space. Argote’s practice is in conversation with the site she is working from, often pointing to the body, to class, and to economic structures in relationship to the architecture and to personal history.

CARMEN ARGOTE    VOICE MEMO

Nora N. Khan is a writer and editor of criticism on digital visual culture and philosophy of emerging technology. Her writing practice extends to a range of artistic collaborations, from libretto to short films, to a tiny house. She is a critic on the Digital + Media faculty at Rhode Island School of Design, where she teaches theory, technological criticism, artistic research, and writing across Graphic Design, Digital + Media, and Industrial Design. Her two books are Seeing, Naming, Knowing (The Brooklyn Rail, 2019) and Fear Indexing the X-Files with Steven Warwick, (Primary Information, 2017). Forthcoming this year isThe Artificial and the Real (Art Metropole). She publishes widely, in places like Art in America, Flash Art, Mousse, 4Columns and Rhizome, where she is a long-time editor. Her practice has been supported by a Fogo Island Arts Residency, the Visual Arts Foundation/Crossed Purposes Foundation Critical Writing Grant (2018), an Eyebeam Research Residency (2017), and a Thoma Foundation 2016 Arts Writing Award in Digital Art. This year, as The Shed’s first guest curator, she organized the exhibition Manual Override, focused on contemporary artists engaging and critiquing emerging technology, including Sondra Perry, Martine Syms, and Simon Fujiwara.

Emily Barker is a designer, artist, writer and disability advocate. Their solo exhibition called Built to Scale at Murmurs Gallery in Downtown Los Angeles was featured in Cultured, CurateLA, Flaunt, Autre, Art Viewer, among many others. They attended The School of the Art Institute where they spent most of their time in the Advanced Painting department. They are however not proud of going to a school, like most, who despite preaching inclusion and diversity seem to always choose to uphold ableism, discriminatory faculty, and inaccessibility denying the human right of access to people with mobility devices and accommodations to people with chronic illness. Due to how wheelchair inaccessible housing, artist residencies and galleries are Barkers most recent project Moving Parts is converting a used RV to be a multifunctional space accessible for mobility device users. Inaccessibility is violence and all public space should accommodate everyone’s needs. They believe inaccessibility is a design problem and look forward to creating a world that does not only cater to the able bodied.

Porpentine Charity Heartscape is a writer, game designer, and dead swamp milf in Oakland. She has exhibited at the Whitney Biennial, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, is a Sundance Institute and Tiptree fellow, and has been commissioned by Vice and Rhizome. She is the author of With Those We Love Alive, Psycho Nymph Exile, and Eczema Angel Orifice.

PORPENTINE

Being a twenty-first century writer, the question one continually faces is that of writing's place in the contemporary media environment. Since what I most like to write are books, I have to confront the possibility that it's in some senses an obsolete media. Many of my books have projects attached to them in other media that arise out of collaboration with artists of other forms. What I'd like to show you are these projects: the networked book version of Gamer Theory, the comic for The Beach Beneath the Street, the #3Debord printed Guy Debord action figure for The Spectacle of Disintegration, the video collaboration with Dis for General Intellects, and the ambient techno album Lonesome Cowgirl I just released to go with Reverse Cowgirl.
