BEING IN BETWEEN: DESIGN | MEDIA ARTS FACULTY

The diverse backgrounds and expertise of the D|MA senate faculty reflect the direction and philosophy of the department. This unique group of media artists, designers and theorists all make connections between design but then branch off into art and science, architecture, sculpture, performance, technological innovations, sensors and robotics, information spaces, database aesthetics, fashion and technology.
Lectures by Victoria Vesna, Casey Reas, Vasa Mihich, Jennifer Steinkamp, Rebeca Méndez, Robert Israel, Christian Moeller, Erkki Huhtamo, Katherine Hayles, and Mark Hansen.
All lectures are free. Refreshments will be provided.

ROBERT ISRAEL BIOGRAPHY:
Robert Israel is a designer of sets and costumes who has worked extensively in the United States and Europe. Among the opera companies with whom he has collaborated: the Vienna Stattsoper, the English National Opera in London, the Paris Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, the Los Angeles Opera, and the San Francisco Opera. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, and an Obie Award. His complete designs for the opera "Satyagraha" by Philip Glass were acquired by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He is formerly the chairman of the Department of Theater in the School of Theater, Film and Television at UCLA and is currently a professor in the Department of Design | Media Arts. He is currently working on designs for the Alben Berg's opera "Lulu" for the National Opera in Tokyo, and "Peter Grimes" for the Zurich Opera.
