Size: 14" x 10.5" x 1" Medium: Acrylic FOB is a polemical designated to create experience of the difficulties non-English speakers face for living in the United States, and speaking language that is not their mother tongue. When landing on a certain grid on the board, the players are offered different situations in their lives and given two options. By reading the pros and cons for each option, the players have to make decisions. Depending on the decisions, there would be lost and gain. The objective is to survive till the end without being eliminated in the process. In order to win the game, the players have to not only complete tasks successfully, but also be able to pass the final task. Through FOB, I am seeking to offer an alternative way of thinking to people who grow up in the U.S. By putting them into the shoes of people who are called "fobs," I aim to expose the hard time non-native speaker face and the courage required to leave their home country to pursue a dream in another country. For a person who did not grow up in America, I have faced the same self-conflicts of whether I should adopt the new environment or stick with my cultural root when I came to the States five years ago. A lot of situations that is addressed in this game are the struggles that I have encountered myself, and that becomes my motivation for making this game and letting more people to know the struggles that non- English speakers face when we first came to a country that is far away from the place that we are familiar with.
