UCLA Design Media Arts presents Free As In, a graduate MFA exhibition on view at the New Wight Gallery at UCLA’s Broad Art Center opening October 13th at 5pm. The exhibit is curated by artist and designer Rebeca Mendez.
The title Free As In refers to the slogan “Free As In Speech, Not Free As In Beer.” This rallying cry appeared at the dawning of the free software movement, attempting to draw a distinction between software that was free to use versus software that was free to own, modify and improve. Propelled by this galvanizing slogan, the open source software community grew in strength and stature, though with significant problems with diversity and representation.
The 11 MFA candidates of Design Media Arts take a multidisciplinary approach to exploring issues of freedom and representation in their artwork. Among other themes, questions of self-surveillance, digital geographies and post-representational approaches bubble to the surface.
With ubiquitous access to free software (Google Maps, Gmail, Facebook…) and an always-connected culture the distinction between free of charge and intellectual freedom is as important as ever. Who owns our data and our thoughts? Who can access them? What have we given up? What have we gained? Among these questions, the artists approach issues of agency, representation, self-expression, utility, memory, and labor. Their approaches run the gamut from abstraction to post-internet art, each with their own distinct studio practices culminating in Free As in.
Participating Artists: Symrin Chawla, Matthew Doyle, David Ertel, Sanglim Han, Kate Hollenbach, Rui Hu, Yuehao Jiang, Alice Jung, Lander, Amanda Stojanov, Lee Tusman.
Free As In will be on view until October 20, 2016 at New Wight Gallery, Broad Art Center, Suite 1100 Los Angeles, CA 90095. For more information, visit dma.ucla.edu
