The Big & Small of This & That: The work of a restless designer

May 24, 2004, 12:00 am   »

A survey of work by a graphic designer and design educator, attempting to give coherence to a body of work that appears to lack a common denominator. The projects range from books, websites, software design, exhibition design and media design, to visual research and work of her students.

Louise Sandhaus is Co-Director of the Graphic Design Program at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), principal of LSD (Louise Sandhaus Design), and partner in the design collective, Durfee Regn Sandhaus. Starting in advertising at 14, her career has permutated through magazine design, corporate design, software interface design, books, websites, and most recently, design for complexmuseum exhibitions. But teaching and design education are equal engagements. Her writing and work have been published widely; her work has received numerous awards; she has organized a number of design education conferences; and her work is in the permanent collections of SF MoMA and the Biblioteque Nationale, Paris.

Louise has an MFA from CalArts, and a Laureate for post-graduate studies from the Jan van Eyck Akademie in The Netherlands.
