SCI-arc supply store
I found myself in heaven at the SCI-arc supply store... different types, sizes and thickness of foam core, museum board, chip board. Fantastic selection of woods and plastic parts and all necessary miscellaneous pieces for model building. Plus all the other art store/corner-hardware-store goodies. It's a couple blocks from SCI-arc. Map>>

Bent-Tronics
Online vendor with a few items aimed at people doing circuit bending. You can find most of this stuff elsewhere locally, like All Electronics, for better prices, but there are a couple of interesting items available. Also, because of its target audience, it gives a little more focus than a lot of other stores.

Apex Electronics
Totally amazing and overwhelming surplus electronics store in Sun Valley. 10,000 square feet. Great place to get wires, motors, phone booths, etc. You will probably die if you're shopping here when an earthquake hits. If you're a novice or just browsing, Apex can be a little too much to handle, there is so much stuff that looks so cool that you end up not buying anything. The prices for the surplus stuff out back are not a steal (you will drop some cash). They have a great selection of knobs and buttons. Not really any LED's or precious stuff like that. Apex is greasy, dusty, and kind of chaotic.

Electronic City
OK store for components and extras (prototype boards, project kits, etc.) Most of the guys who work here seem to hate eachother and everyone who walks into the store. I've never had a pleasant experience with one of them. The prices are significantly higher than All Electronics, but not as bad as Radio Shack. They actually do have a decent selection of NTE components and switches, buttons, sockets, etc. Their webpage does a rotten job of showing what they've got (its organized by Brand rather than utility). Worth dropping by if you're in the neighborhood, or if they have exactly what you need, but otherwise not the best choice.

W6TRW Swapmeet
The W6TRW Swapmeet started in the '60's as a "Tail Gate" event and has evolved to the monthly event that it is today. The same basic objective is still around as it was long ago, usually for a ham to gather up his/her old stuff that they no longer need, or perhaps to find something better, or to clear out a garage or hamshack. Computers have become a necessity for many, you'll see lots of computers and parts for sale as well. It is one of the largest continuous running Amateur Swapmeets in the country.
The Swapmeet is ALWAYS the LAST Saturday of every month RAIN or SHINE!!!!
