Thursday, May 30th 5-7pm DAVID FAMILIAN "Echo & Narcissus": EXHIBITION opening CNSI 5419 / Art|Sci gallery Echo & Narcissus is an installation that explores this ancient myth as a metaphor for the interaction between two individuals who cannot communicate with one another. Consisting of an interactive visual projection on water, a soundtrack of Echo's voice and projected text generated from a script, each of these distinct elements utilizes counterpoint to produce a series of visual and sonic relationships.  As a viewer looks into the water the viewer sees an image of their own face gradually materializing, dematerializing, disappearing, then reappearing once again in different forms. As the counterpoint, Echo’s voice permeates the space, moving throughout the gallery creating a haunting affect as it surrounds the viewer, then recedes. A text projected along the wall generates a narrative that is in dialogue with Echo’s voice. Echo & Narcissus is directed/produced by artist/curator David Familian, who is artistic director of the Beall Center for Art + Technology at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, UC Irvine. His collaborating team includes author Terry Wolverton, writer of the voice of Echo and the narrative and two media artists: Eric Parren, programmer of the interactive elements and sound, and David Leonard, programmer of the generated text and co-producer the project.

Thursday, May 9, 5-7pm CHRISTINA AGAPAKIS “Bacterial Encounters”: Exhibition + Workshop CNSI 5419 / Art|Sci Gallery Microbes are often synonymous with rot, decay, infection, and disease. When microbes are made visible—or worse, smellable—it signals danger, a situation best avoided. But microbes are unavoidable, essential as part of the ecology of the healthy human body and the global dynamics of biogeochemical cycles. The growing realization of microbial usefulness and diversity is changing our relationship to microorganisms from one of fear, isolation, and sterilization, to a more ecological understanding of symbiotic exchange. Bacterial Encounters is an exploration of nature and culture from a microbiological perspective, capturing the microbial ecology of the human body and the living diversity thriving after the death of the Salton Sea. Through culturing such microbes, we make visible the ecologies that make up our bodies and our world.

The UCLA Game Lab in collaboration with the Hammer Student Association (HSA) presents an evening of innovative gaming curated by Game Lab director and associate professor of Design Media Arts Eddo Stern.With games ranging from the bombastic and performative to the intimate and personal, these ambitious and participatory projects use a variety of media and modes of expression. Browse the games or participate in a tournament while enjoying live music, refreshments, and game-inspired artwork. A curated series of extraordinary video collages will also be on view, including the panoramic Westcoast by German artist and filmmakerUlu Braun, Right Here, Out There (Nowhere) by Philadelphia-based collaborative team Hironaka & Suib, and various works by German artist, filmmaker and curator Robert Seidel. Ranging from the provocatively serious to the profoundly silly, the more than 35 games selected for this year’s festival include: - Perfect Woman (Lea Schoenfelder and Peter Lu) This motion-based performance game charts the course of a woman’s life through seven stages, probing the social expectations placed on women. - Laser Cabinet (Khalil Klouche) Featuring side-mounted buttons like a pinball machine for controls, Laser Cabinet turns its seemingly blank wooden surface into a playable videogame. - Objectif (Aliah Magdalena Darke) Objectif is card game that, as the game designer and UCLA student Aliah Magdalena Darke explains, “challenges our perceptions of race, women and beauty while simultaneously revealing the assumptions we make about ourselves and others.” - UlakTartysh, or that goat-carcass polo game (acquired by Jason Tochinsky). This rare, 1983 arcade game simulates the Central Asian sport of buzkashi, which is akin to playing polo with the carcass of a headless goat. It’s true. - The Propheteers (Nick Crockett) The Propheteers is a board game of faith, money and power. Or, as the rules state, “He or she who has collected the greatest earthly wealth in the name of the LORD shall be the victor, and the rest be DAMNED. Amen.” - Bollywood Wannabe (Chrysaor Studio) Dance, dance, dance for movie stardom in this rhythm platform game that allows players to create their own choreography. - In a Permanent Save State (Benjamin Poynter) Banned from Apple’s iTunes store, this game by Benjamin Poynter is based on the 2010 suicides at the Foxconn plant where many electronic products are mass produced. - Featured UCLA Game Lab Backpack running the game Exit Pallette (Stephen Ou and Stefan Wojciechowski) The ultimate, portable arcade machine is designed to be worn as a backpack, will feature Exit Pallette, a puzzleplatform game based on RGB subtractive color theory. Lately, I’ve been getting really stuck on my design projects. How do you find inspiration?

Most creative people experience this at some point! There’s no sure way of getting out of a creative block, but many methods have been attempted over time. Brian Eno developedÂ oblique strategiesÂ to generate new ways of approaching a subject. Ellen Lupton wrote aboutÂ this guideÂ from the 70s that contained exercises for creative thinking. IfÂ EinsteinÂ was stuck on a problem, he wouldÂ hold heavy steel balls before drifting off to sleep â�� awakening suddenly when the balls clacked on the floor, usually coming up with new inspiration. I think the trick is to totally shift your current way of working â�� act on your worst impulses, relocate to a different workspace, go outside and have a conversation with someone, etc. It’s always good to keep a database of your favorite project references, so you can identify patterns of thinking in what you’re drawn to the most. Don’t be over-critical when you start working; try every idea before dismissing it. You’ll probably find the most inspiration in the circumstances you create for yourself.Â
