LATENT STATE

Latent State is a live cinema piece: a video performance where the digital is combined with the analog to create a new liminal space between the objects and devices Andres uses during the performance -- images in the computer and on the projection screen. The starting point for this piece is a confrontation between the sense of childhood wonder and the realization of the reality of death. The element at the crux of this confrontation is space travel: a common children’s fantasy to become an astronaut and to have adventures in space. At the same time, the space conjures images of death and terror: a space ship exploding, the astronauts running out of oxygen, falling into the void. Space is at the same time a source of wonder and terror. The goal of this piece is to give a personal account of a child’s realization of death, and coming to terms with it. The tragedy of the Challenger space shuttle serves as the turning point between wonder and terror, and as such it is used (both by resorting to TV footage from the accident as well as to transcripts and quotes) to articulate the piece.
