"Robot and Japanese Life Style"

Robot is a part of Japanese culture, with connection to popular/subculture such as manga (Japanese comics) and anime (animation). At the same time it's application reflects the Japanese life style, including social welfare system, security, and urban life. To meet the Japanese notion of robot and human-robot relationship, designing a robot is much more than just designing a machine.

Machiko Kusahara, Ph.D is a curator of media art and a scholar in the field of media studies and media art. She has published internationally in the field of art, technology, culture and history while being involved in founding art venues including NTT/ICC and served as a jury member for SIGGRAPH, Ars Electronica, ISEA, among many others. She taught at UCLA in 2002-03, and is currently a professor at Waseda University.
