In DESMA 1 students will learn basic and advanced photography skills using a digital camera. Students will alter/manipulate photos using techniques from the latest versions of Adobe Photoshop and create layouts utilizing Adobe InDesign. Students will produce a printed piece incorporating photographs and typography.At the end of the course students will be able to produce a magazine. Students will have the opportunity to explore the UCLA campus to shoot photographs and will participate in a field trip to a printing production house.
In DESMA 2 students will learn how web design works by starting with basic hand coding and then moving on to creating a hypermedia project with Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash software. Students will scan in photographs and manipulate images in Adobe Photoshop to incorporate into their web designs. Class will review various commercial web sites and Net Art projects to analyze successful use of the web and understand the enormous potential of the Internet.
In DESMA 3 students will be introduced to game design fundamentals by analyzing popular games, as well as learning the different steps required to develop a digital game. They will learn about storyboarding, character design and animation, as well as programming.Students will create their games using Macromedia Flash and ActionScript. At the end of the class students will publish their game on the class website. Class may include a visit from a professional game developer or field trip.
In DESMA 4 students will create a short music video. Students will shoot and edit their own work and learn the fundamentals of pre- and post-production. Students will create a storyboard and utilize the latest digital video software (Adobe Premiere/Adobe After Effects) to compose their video and audio clip.At the end of this course students will burn a DVD of their finished production. This course will include a visit from a professional video producer who will help guide students in creating their own videos.
