The D|MA Summer Institute is designed for high school students who are interested in exploring their creative potential by using the most current software and working with trained and experienced instructors and professionals. Students not only develop pieces that can be submitted for applications to college but also earn two units of college credit for attending class. In a short time they will taste the excitement of being a part of a cutting edge department that will help motivate them during their last years of high school and prepare them for college life. At the end of class students will have the ability to create their own online portfolio that they can show to friends and family and use in high school and college arts admission applications. Students can also stay in the UCLA residence halls to fully experience campus life.
Although our workshops are designed to last a week, we recommend that students enroll in both weeks to gain as many skills as possible and incorporate work from other modules. All workshops meet every day with hands on instruction in the lab for two sessions per day, totaling in 32.5 hours of instruction. Class size is limited to 20 students. Each class has two highly skilled instructors from the Department of Design | Media Arts teaching college level skills.

The program fee is $1030 for the program and $420 for housing.
+ HOUSING & MEALS
Students may attend the Design | Media Arts Summer Institute as either Day Students or as Residential Students. We strongly encourage families to consider enrolling their child in the residential plan. By lodging together, students have the opportunity to get to know their classmates and UCLA better, and will be able to spend more time working on their art, and just relaxing. Choosing the residential option will also help alleviate any safety and time concerns inherent in an urban commute. Residential students will be supervised by the UCLA staff throughout the duration of their stay. Residential students are schedule to be housed in Hedrick Hall for this program.
The cost of housing is $420 per person (based on double occupancy) which includes 2 meals (breakfast and dinner) each day. There are a number of inexpensive eating establishments conveniently located around the UCLA campus where students can purchase their lunch each day.
Note: Students enrolling in consecutive sessions who want to stay on campus during the Saturday evening in-between the 2 sessions should contact Summer Sessions after registering for the program.

The day will be divided into two sessions, one in the morning beginning at 9 am and one in the afternoon ending at 5 pm. Classes last for one week (five days) and will meet 6.5 hours each day.
9:00 am - 12:30 pm
Instruction in lab. Students will be introduced to the workshop content. In some courses students will work in groups or individually.
12:30 pm - 2:00 pm Lunch
Students must bring money for their lunch. There are a number of inexpensive campus eating establishments located close to the Broad Art Center and around UCLA campus.
2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Students work on developing their projects with the help of instructors. One-on-one instruction is the main focus during this time. Some days there will be visitors from the field or the department giving input and showing work that is of interest, such as games, videos and print examples.
+ EVENING ACTIVITIES
For students living in residence halls, there are many possible nighttime activities, such as movies, swimming, exercise and games. All activities are in groups and supervised by program counselors.
Thursday Evenings
Extended lab hours are usually offered from 6 pm -9 pm.

The closing reception with awards ceremony will be held in the Broad Art Center each Friday. Parents are encouraged to attend the presentation for all groups.

+ GRAPHIC DESIGN
Instructor: Noa Kaplan-Sears
In DESMA 1 students will learn basic and advanced photography skills using a digital camera. Students will alter/manipulate photos using techniques from the latest versions of Adobe Photoshop and create layouts utilizing Adobe InDesign. Students will produce a printed piece incorporating photographs and typography.
At the end of the course students will be able to produce a magazine. Students will have the opportunity to explore the UCLA campus to shoot photographs and will participate in a field trip to a printing production house.

+ WEB DESIGN
Instructor: David Leonard
In DESMA 2 students will learn how web design works by starting with basic hand coding and then moving on to creating a hypermedia project with Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash software. Students will scan in photographs and manipulate images in Adobe Photoshop to incorporate into their web designs. Class will review various commercial web sites and Net Art projects to analyze successful use of the web and understand the enormous potential of the Internet.

+ GAME DESIGN
Instructor: Jonathan Cecil
In DESMA 3 students will be introduced to game design fundamentals by analyzing popular games, as well as learning the workflow required to develop an independent digital game. Students will learn about methods for storyboarding, character design and animation, as well as programming.
Students will create their games using Unity 3 as a game engine and Adobe Creative Suite for game asset creation. At the end of the class students will publish their game on the class website. Class may include a visit from a professional game developer or field trip.

+ AUDIO VIDEO DESIGN
Instructor: Mattia Casalegno
In DESMA 4 students will engage with a set of tools and techniques to produce and combine audiovisual content in real-time, creating works of live cinema, live media and vjing. The emphasis will be on the use of real-time technologies instead of conventional linear editing tools. Students will learn to produce original content, mix and edit in real time with professional multi-platform software such as Resolume Avenue, Module8 and Cycling74 Max/Msp/Jitter, and will learn different techniques of "video-mapping", to design visuals seamlessly integrated with the architecture.
The focus of the course is the relationship of real-time audiovisuals to built space, and will culminate with a collaborative project where a portion of the Broad Art Center building is entrusted to each student, with the prompt to engage the existent architecture with personal audiovisual designs.

+ GRADING
Program participants will earn two units of credit per week on a pass/no pass grading basis which will be recorded on an official University of California transcript. Please note that official transcripts are not automatically sent to students. + TRANSCRIPTS
The transcript is a permanent record that reflects all undergraduate and graduate work completed at UCLA. It lists courses, units, grades, cumulative grade-point average, transfer credits, total units, and work in progress in chronological order. For students from other UC campuses, all UCLA summer activity automatically appears on your home UC campus transcript, and the grades you earn at UCLA are included in your home UC campus grade-point average.
Ordering a transcript should be done online through URSA. Noncurrent students and those requiring expedited or special delivery can submit a Transcript Request Form in person at the Registrar's Office. Transcript Request Forms can be downloaded from the Registrar's Web Site or picked up at 1113 Murphy Hall between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday – Friday.
Current students’ transcript fees are billed to their student account. Former students should submit a check or money order payable to UC-Regents. Requests are not processed if students have outstanding financial, academic, or administrative obligations to the university.
Class will take place in the newly-renovated Broad Art Center, home of UCLA's School of Arts and Architecture. The Broad Art Center is located beside the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden, in the northeast corner of the UCLA campus.

+ PARKING
Students driving to UCLA each day for the Design and Media Art Institute should plan to park in Lot 3, located at the northeast corner of campus off of Hilgard Avenue. From Sunset Boulevard, turn south onto Hilgard Avenue, and make a right onto Wyton Road. Proceed to the Parking Kiosk to purchase a daily permit for $10.00, and ask to be directed to Lot 3.
